CON-TATTO

A tool that support the ritual of eating with hands to encourage Pleasure, Mindfulness, and Connection!

The concept of hand-eating extends beyond a simple change in eating method; it represents a powerful shift in how we perceive and interact with our food. In many cultures around the world, hand-eating is deeply ingrained in tradition, signifying a connection to heritage and a more intimate appreciation for the meal. This practice encourages a heightened awareness of the food's sensory qualities, the temperature against the skin, and the overall feel of the ingredients. By engaging the sense of touch, individuals move beyond the purely functional act of eating and enter into a more immersive, multi-sensory experience.  This can lead to a slowing down of the eating process, fostering mindful consumption and greater satisfaction. From a psychological perspective, research highlights the therapeutic value of tactile food exploration.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy utilizes hands-on interaction with "non-threatening" food textures to address tactile defensiveness, particularly in individuals with sensory sensitivities or disordered eating patterns such as patients with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), a condition characterized by limited food variety and/or avoidance of food based on sensory characteristics. The controlled and gradual exposure to different food textures through hand-eating could serve as a helpful therapeutic technique to reduce anxiety and increase food acceptance. This approach demonstrates the potential of hand-eating to not only enhance enjoyment but also to promote healthier attitudes and behaviors towards food. In essence, the concept advocates for a return to a more primal and sensory-rich way of eating, fostering a more positive and connected relationship with nourishment.
