A new product line from 'Oh Ka Jhu' where signature meets future! These are the experimental packaged products made with insects including “Cricket, Mealworms, and Silkworm”, aim to introduce the customers to the ingredients of tomorrow with exclusive experience that can help them increase nutrition intake and overcome their mental limitations.

Challenge Statement

How might we create a new product line made from edible insects for OH KA JHU’s customers so that they can open their minds with the future superfoods and experience an extraordinary journey for their mind and body?

Oh ka jhu always follows a concept 'farm to table' and tagline of 'ปลูกผักเพราะรักแม่' with a goal to serve organic foods without any pesticides residue. As the brand would like to have a new product line of the alternative protein and present the customers with the new way of eating and new experience, Oh Ka Jhu coperates with the world-class standard insect farm, ‘Piamsook Farm’ and develops the the new experimental product ‘Insect sausages’ paired with Mom’s signature dressings with a concept of ‘Experimental product for future’.

  • This unique kit features sausage balls in a variety of flavors, each representing one of ten distinct levels of insect intensity. To elevate the tasting experience, every sausage ball is paired with Oh Kha Jhu’s signature dressing, thoughtfully crafted to complement each bite.

Process

At the heart of the “OH MA LANG” project is an innovative prototyping journey that transformed the concept of insect-based food into a tangible, engaging experience. Starting with the idea of blending Oh Ka Jhu’s organic, farm-to-table identity with the nutritional power of edible insects, the team developed sausage balls using cricket, mealworm, and silkworm powders. The prototyping phase involved meticulous formulation to balance taste, texture, and insect intensity resulting in 10 levels of insect content across a kit of sausage balls, each paired with a unique signature dressing. Extensive testing focused on maintaining approachability for first-time insect eaters while preserving the insects' unique flavors. Prototypes were made and tasted separately while packaging mockups were made by visualizing individual vacuum-sealed biodegradable cups and included features like labeled sauces in dropper bottles for function and playability of the tasting experience. Customer’s feedback from early trials led to more refined flavor profiles, balanced odors, and enhanced visual appeal, ensuring the final product was both innovative and consumer-friendly.
