Platescape

is a playful multi-sensorial plate that helps 3-5 years old children to avoid picky eating behavior and explore more nutritious foods, like soups and vegetables.

Let's play with FOOD! 〰️

This project explores the concept of "Healthy Pleasure" in the context of food, aiming to understand how design can contribute to sustainable and healthy eating patterns. The research delves into the complexities of food stigmatization, the lack of awareness around natural ingredients, and the impact of urban lifestyles on eating behaviors. Ultimately, the project seeks to develop strategies that promote "neutral" labeling and basic food education, particularly for children, to foster a healthier relationship with food from an early age.

Our research shows that

Children need to be exposed to food at least 12 times and up to 30 times before they truly decide whether or not they don't like the food.

Functions

The process begins with a typical family meal taking place at home. Initially, the meal is presented on a conventional plate, and children are given the opportunity to explore the food without any pressure or judgment regarding their choices.

‘Platescape’ is then introduced to the table setting, and the family continues their meal as usual. This allows the children to become familiar with Platescape in a natural setting. Following this, the children are encouraged to pick out some food from the meal and place it onto Platescape, promoting direct interaction with the product. Platescape then serves a specific function: it becomes a designated area where children can place any unwanted food items, particularly vegetables, effectively creating a "no thank you" zone. The conventional eating plate is removed, and Platescape, now containing the children's selected food, is moved closer to them, indicating that they are meant to eat from it.

After or during the meal, the children are allowed to play with the different components of Platescape, engaging their senses and imagination. The final step involves cleaning and properly storing Platescape until the next meal.
